Dr. Larry Schlesinger - Getting ready for your 'Mommy Makeover'

You spend countless hours caring for your loved ones, now it’s time to give yourself a little love too. If you’re planning on getting what a lot of us here in Hawaii call the “Mommy Makeover," here are few things you can do to ensure success and satisfaction with the results.
Being Healthy
Having good health habits is important. You want to be in as good health as possible on the day of your plastic surgery procedure. It’s not a problem if you have medical conditions, you just want to make sure they are well controlled before having any kind of surgery.
If you think something is uncontrolled or just not right, discuss it with us before the procedure. No matter how excited we all are for you to have your makeover, risking complications due to illness or injury can be dangerous.
No Smoking
If you smoke, you need to quit at least a month before surgery and continue to not smoke through the entire recovery process. Smoking can cause multiple complications during surgery, because it constricts the blood vessels thus reducing the amount of oxygen delivery to your cells. Lack of oxygen rich blood flow throughout your body diminishes its ability to heal and may also cause scars to heal more slowly.
Avoid Unnecessary Medications
It will be important to avoid over-the-counter medications that thin the blood, which can cause difficulty during surgery. Some of those medicines include Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Naprosyn (along with their brand name counterparts: Motrin, Advil, Aleve, etc…). Your physician will give you a list of the medications to avoid and the duration of cessation prior to your procedure.
Follow Doctor's Orders
Following all pre-operative instructions is very important. You will likely be asked to avoid drinking and eating the night before your surgery, as well as refrain from taking certain medications, vitamins or minerals. If you forget not to eat or drink, or if you have taken anything that what was not recommended, it is crucial that you inform your doctor before the procedure. Your safety is always of the utmost importance.
