A few months ago, my brother asked me how many breast augmentations or tummy tucks I could possibly do and still enjoy it. He asked if I wasn’t bored after 20 years of lifting and tucking and changing faces, breasts, and bodies.
I thought about this for a long time and my answer is NO, I love what I do. I love being able to change someone’s “imperfection” and make it so much more comfortable and, yes, pretty.
When my patients first come in, they are almost embarrassed because they think their requests are shallow. I remind them that everyone maintains their lawn and their house. You paint your house when it needs a new coat of paint. You fix a dent in your car after an accident. Your face and body are the windows to your true self. We are such a visual society that unfortunately many people will not go beyond the exterior to your soul if the exterior isn’t appealing.
Your appearance, like houses, needs curb appeal. When you go shopping for clothes, do you try something on that has NO APPEAL to you?? Of course not, so yes our appearance does matter and it indicates that you actually care about yourself enough to make a good first impression.
Ask anyone who has had a breast reduction, breast augmentation, facelift, or tummy tuck if it didn’t make them feel SO much more confident, happier and healthier.
What you forget is the psychology behind the transformation. Don’t you feel personally better after a haircut, highlights, or when you’ve purchased a new dress or lipstick? Yes, you feel better and you feel more motivated to take better care of the rest of yourself!
So, yes, I love giving my patients another chance at living life to the fullest, to take advantage of every opportunity to be their best, and to have the self-confidence to contribute to a better world through their daily actions. Yes, I believe we must like and love ourselves first before we can do all the above and one of the first things we need to do is make sure we feel happy about the way we look.
